New York-based pianist and composer Vijay Iyer, of Indian extraction, is regarded as one of the most talented musicians of contemporary jazz.
New York
The New York Times describes Iyer’s quirky style as “aggressive and rich.” Iyer, who collaborated with such important figures in jazz as Steve Coleman and Amiri Baraka, and underground spoken-word MCs like Mike Ladd in post-9/11 America, was nominated for the Grammy in “Best Instrumental Jazz Album” in 2010. He names Duke Ellington and Debussy among his inspirations. Iyer will be accompanied during his Babylon performance by Marcus Gilmore on drums and Stephen Crump on bass guitar.
