Ilhan Ersahin's Wonderland project, consisting of musicians who see “wonders” in the chaos that is Istanbul, will take stage at Babylon on Friday, 9 December.
While his technique has been famously compared to that of legends like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, Ilhan Ersahin came into his own a long time ago. The band he founded with the esteemed clarinet artist Husnu Senlendirici fuses traditional and contemporary over the Istanbulite sound. In Wonderland, an observant and genuine expression of Ersahin’s relationship with Istanbul, essential elements of jazz – sax, bass, drums and guitar - digitally blend with vital instruments of Turkish music, the clarinet and darbuka. The performance combines arabesque, dub, trip-hop, electronic jazz, drum'n'bass, Balkan and Roma beats in a musical wave.
